Independence Day in Timor-Leste

Timor-Leste has a long and complicated history, shaped by Portuguese colonial rule, Indonesian occupation, and a decades-long struggle for independence. After centuries under Portuguese rule, Indonesia invaded in 1975 and occupied Timor-Leste for 24 years. Following a UN-backed referendum in 1999, Timor-Leste finally gained its independence in 2002, becoming one of the world’s newest nations.

I had watched many documentaries about its history and the struggle of its people, and eventually decided that I had to visit for myself to get a better understanding of this young nation.
